Probably, the oldest settlement in the area of today’s „large“ Spindler Mlyn was a group of poor houses that were used occasionally as a shelter for miners working at the iron ore mines. Oldest records about this area come from the beginning of the 16th century.History of Spindleruv Mlyn
Spindleruv Mlyn as an autonomous settlement emerged on July 13, 1793. At this day attempts of neighbours meeting in the mill on the bank of Labe owned by a miller Spindler were fulfilled. Residents – woodsmen living in houses on shoulders and mines in Dlouhy dul obtained a charter from the emperor Franz 1. allowing them to build own church. While on the other side of mountains first romantic wanderers were heading from Silesian Warmbrunn (today Cieplice Slaskie) with guides and rackers, there was a silence around St. Peter’s church.History of tourism in Spindleruv Mlyn
The transformation of the settlement with few houses into a mountain resort occurred in the second half of the 19th century. Many pubs and housing places emerged. Also, mountain cottages concentrated on tourist services. Poor mountaineers became rich entrepreneurs and hoteliers. Giant Mountains became the most accessible mountains in Bohemia. At the end of the 19th century was Spindleruv Mlyn and Giant Mountains damaged by natural disasters as water flooding. During the Second World War Spindleruv Mlyn turned into an asylum for many people from bombed German communities and was full of hospitals for German soldiers. There is 640 buildings in the area of Spindleruv Mlyn (large 7 692 ha , 6 872 ha of forests). This number includes 43 hotels, 143 pensions and 23 mountain cottages. There is 1300 permanent residents and many of season workers. New housing construction (310 new apartments) has concentrated in Bedrichov. There is plenty of new private pensions and many of older buildings were reconstructed.There are 3 new skiing areas: Svaty Petr, Medvedin and Hromovka.
